Software Engineer Senior (Full Stack)

We build websites and applications that people rely on to do their work. As a Software Engineer Senior (Full Stack) at GrassFed, you’ll take substantial features and applications from an initial set of goals through technical design, implementation, testing, release, and ongoing improvement.

You’ll work across React frontends, Node.js APIs, PostgreSQL databases, and AWS applications. Working alongside our designers and engineers, you’ll turn open questions into practical solutions, build the challenging parts, and help other developers deliver work they can stand behind.

• Own the technical delivery of substantial features and applications, from clarifying requirements and choosing an approach through implementation, testing, release, and maintenance.
• Break projects into clear tasks, estimate effort, identify dependencies and risks, and communicate progress and tradeoffs early.
• Design maintainable React interfaces, Node.js services, APIs, and data models, balancing usability, security, reliability, performance, and operating cost.
• Build responsive, accessible interfaces and reliable backend services with clear contracts, validation, authentication, and server-side authorization.
• Integrate external services and design for webhooks, retries, duplicate events, and partial failures.
• Lead investigations into complex production issues across the interface, API, database, and AWS environment. Address root causes and improve monitoring, recovery, and release practices.
• Review complex changes, mentor associates and interns, and help teammates work through technical decisions and blockers.
• Use coding agents to implement, debug, refactor, and test changes. Verify their output and improve the instructions, tests, and review practices the team uses with these tools.

• Base salary of $100,000 to $115,000 per year, with final compensation based on relevant experience and demonstrated ability.
• On-site work with our team in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

What you’ll bring

• At least five years of professional full stack development experience, including ownership of substantial features or applications in production.
• Strong JavaScript and TypeScript skills, with deep practical experience building React frontends and Node.js backends.
• The ability to turn designs into responsive, accessible interfaces using HTML, CSS, and maintainable React components, including complex forms, validation, state management, and data fetching.
• Experience designing REST APIs with clear contracts, request validation, consistent errors, pagination, and reliable integrations between services.
• Strong SQL and PostgreSQL skills, including schema design, migrations, transactions, indexing, query optimization, and protecting data integrity during changes.
• Experience implementing authentication, enforcing authorization on the server, and protecting application data.
• Hands-on experience deploying and maintaining production applications on AWS, including compute, storage, IAM permissions, environment configuration, monitoring, and logs.
• Experience independently troubleshooting frontend, backend, database, and infrastructure problems across multiple projects, including systems you did not originally build.
• Experience with automated testing, code reviews, CI/CD, production releases, and rollback planning.
• Sound technical judgment: you can clarify incomplete requirements, compare approaches, explain tradeoffs, and make decisions that remain practical as an application grows.
• Experience reviewing other developers’ work, providing useful technical feedback, and helping less experienced teammates improve.

Working with AI

We expect hands-on experience using coding agents to implement, debug, refactor, and test substantial changes across a codebase.

You should be able to structure work, provide relevant context and instructions, guide execution, and change direction when an approach fails. You are responsible for verifying functionality, security, and data correctness, including subtle problems that automated checks may miss.

You should also help the team improve its use of these tools through useful project instructions, focused tests, and consistent review practices. That includes understanding tool permissions and handling private code, credentials, and client data responsibly.

During the hiring process, be prepared to walk us through a substantial project and a task you completed with a coding assistant. We’ll want to understand the decisions you made, what went wrong, and how you verified the result. You may discuss professional work without sharing private code or client information.

• Express, Prisma, OpenAPI, and generated API clients.
